Tepeztate is considered to be one of the agaves with the longest maturation rate sometimes taking up to thirty years to reach maturity.

It’s scientific name is derived from the latin word for marble as it is often found growing out of marble seems on sides of cliffs. The common name tepeztate is derived from the Nahuatl word “tepetl” meaning “hill”.
